Connecticut: Act Now to Stop Attempts to Weaken Gun Law
The gun advocates, gun industry lobbyists and certain legislators are looking for an amendment that would allow persons who defied the law to keep assault weapons and large capacity magazine that they didn’t register by January 1, 2014.
Please click here to contact your legislators. Tell them we strongly oppose any amendment to allow people to keep assault weapons and large capacity magazines who defied the law by failing to register those weapons and accessories.
Many gun rights activists have stated in the press and at rallies that they do not consider this law valid and have purposefully refused to register their weapons and magazines in protest. Allowing people who have willfully decided to defy the law is unjust and fosters future defiance. We should not be giving special consideration to those who have committed a crime.
The session ends on May 7, just a week from now, and this is the time that attempts are made to catch lawmakers by surprise and push through measures like this.
You must let your legislators know that we are here and we are watching and we will not stand for weakening this important legislation that the people of Connecticut wanted and that our legislature so courageously enacted.
Our friends at CT Against Gun Violence have created an easy way to take immediate action.
Here is the message that will go to your legislator:
Subject Line: A Constituent Says No to Weakening our Gun Laws
We have become aware that gun right activists and the gun industry are pushing for a last minute deal to allow persons who have defied the law that required them to register their assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines as of January 1, 2014 to keep those weapons.
Please do not allow any midnight hour deal for those who defiantly choose to attack this law by any means. Many gun rights activists have stated in the press and at rallies that they have refused to comply with the registration requirements. They are not law abiding. They have broken the law. We urge you to oppose any proposal that would allow them to keep those weapons after refusing to comply with the law. We are aware that the most ardent activists will go to any length to whittle away provisions of this law that has made our families safer.
We are here; we are watching; and we will not stand for weakening this important legislation that the people of Connecticut wanted and that our legislature so courageously enacted.
A special thanks to our friends at CT Against Gun Violence. http://www.cagv.org
